Wire, Carrier

Shown is a reel used with field telephones wire. Telephones and wire were (and are) used for military communications. Field telephones operate over wire lines, often using wires strung in combat conditions with a talking range of about 8.0 kilometres (5 mi), or longer depending on the type of cable used.

Soldiers laying wire in the field are trained to connect additional reels of wire together to make longer wire runs. (example: Listening Post/Observation Post (LP/OP), or for communication between temporary or permanent installation in the field.)

Reels were used to lay wire across field between two locations by hand. Each of these reels held about 1/2 kilometer of wire.

Larger reels and lengths were available when laying wire with vehicles for longer distances.

There were many advances in field cable and its method of use during the Great War, a key time for the use of field cable during positional warfare (conducted along permanent and fortified front lines e.g. WW 1.) and before the widespread use of wireless technology.
