Tray, Mess, Food (US Navy Ship)

Purpose: The basic reason for this tray is for serving food. The tray makes serving food and drinks easier, in particular, on a moving ship. Without a tray, it would require considerable physical effort or more than one trip to the food line to carry it.

Stainless steel is renowned for its ability to be easily cleaned and because it is sanitary. The trays are stackable for convenient storage. These utilitarian trays were government-issued and designed for military use.

This tray was most likely made by Carrollton Mfg. produced for the U.S. Navy between the early 1900s through the 1950s. The majority were made during the Second World War. This tray was donated by WO (Craftsman) John F. Reilly when he was transported to the UN action in Korea by a US ship in the early 1950s.
