Set, Telephone, F Mk l - image1Field telephones are telephones used for military communications. They can draw power from their own battery, from a telephone exchange (via a central battery known as cb), or from an external power source. Some need no battery, being sound-powered telephones.

Historical information: Fields telephone were used in 2WW.

Physical description: The military field telephone, with handset, is a portable instrument for army communications generally at a higher level than field troops. It is housed in a wooden box 12” (30.48 cm) long by 7” (17.78 cm) wide by 8” (20.32 cm) high. It weighs 19 lbs. 4 oz (17.9 kg) and is powered by two, 1.5 volt “x” or “s” cells.

The reliable voice range is 13 to 18 miles with twisted D8 wire.

Set, Telephone, F Mk l - image2Inscriptions & markings: Mounted on the front of the telephone is an identification plate with the inscriptions “REPLACE HANDSET WHEN FINISHED AND RING OFF.Telephone set “F” Mk 1. The General Electric Co. Ltd. Telephone Works, Coventry.

Also mounted to the front of the phone is a smaller plate with the inscription “serial no. 295, 1936.” A telephone wire spool is below.
