Carrier, Armoured Personnel, (APC), M113

Carrier, Armoured Personnel, (APC), M113 - M113 fully-Tracked ,Armoured personnel Carrier Recovety Vehicle (2)The M113 is a fully tracked armored personnel carrier (APC) that was developed and produced by the FMC Corporation. A huge number of M113 Armored Personnel Carrier variants have been created, ranging from infantry carriers to nuclear missile carriers. The M113 armored personnel carrier became one of the most prolific armored vehicles of the second half of the 20th century, and continues to serve with armies around the world in many roles.

A M113 could carry 11 infantrymen inside, with two crewmen operating it. Commencing in 1964, Canada procured 1,143 M113A1s from the United States.

In 1979, the US began upgrading the M113A1 to A2 configuration with improvements to the suspension and cooling system. Canadian APC versions similarly upgraded and received the same designation. Upgrades beginning in 1987 created the M113A3 variant, with improvements to engine power and crew survivability. In 2001, 289 of the original M113’s delivered in the 1960s to early 1990s were upgraded to M113A3s. The remainder were declared surplus.

The APC fleet started to be withdrawn from service in the late 1990s, mainly the older M113A1s, and by the mid-2000s, only vehicles upgraded or being upgraded to M113A3 or MTVL standards were still in service.
