During the Cold War era [1947 to 1991], the perceived enemy of the West was the USSR and Warsaw Pact countries. Most reserve military intelligence personnel studied Canadian as well as Warsaw Pact tactics, uniforms and insignia, weapons, organizations, and equipment to prepare for a potential conflict. Until the late 1960s this study also included the Russian language.
