Blade, Hacksaw

Hacksaw blades are primarily used for metal cutting and are made to varying degrees of hardness, matching the intended application. The primary classifications of hacksaw blades are hard blades and flexible blades.

Blade, Hacksaw - image1Escape and Evasion Hacksaw Blade

This is a scarce escape and evasion hacksaw blade in a moulded rubber sleeve.

The rubber sleeve is to protect the blade from rusting and to make concealment easier. The blade was sewn inside the service uniform collar, epaulette or fly of battle dress. The rubber sleeve has the letters DS moulded into it, but the relevance of this is unknown.

Hacksaw blades enabled an escaper or evader to cut through window bars, bolts, chains etc.  They were included within escape kits, in maps/money purses, and hidden in everyday objects or games that could be sent into prisoner of war camps.

Numerous styles and sizes were produced. This example is approximately 4 by 0.5 inch or 10cm by12mm wide.  It has a single edged blade and tapers at one end.  Many blades were packaged within cards, wax paper or rubber to keep them sharp and corrosion free.
