Description: This is a 2WW British No 7 MK1L Land Service bayonet, with its original metal scabbard. It is a rare type. Overall, 176,000, No. 7 bayonets were produced as they were complex and difficult to manufacture. The bayonets were made in total by the manufacturers below:
Royal Ordnance Factory, Newport made 100,000.
Royal Ordanance Factory Poole made 30,000.
Birmingham Small Arms Company made model (M47A) 25,000.
Elkington & Co. made 20,000.
Wilkinson Sword, made 1,000.
Use: The British No 7 MK1L bayonet was an advanced design that could be configured as either a blade or socket type bayonet, and could also be used as a fighting knife. The bayonet has a paxolin handle (a resin composite), bayonet release and swiveling lock mechanisms.
Note: Lee-Enfield Rifle No. 4 was used by Canadian troops during the Second World War. The British No 7 MK1L Bayonet was a bayonet primarily used with the Sten Mk V submachine gun. However, it could be used on the No. 4 Lee-Enfield, but only for ceremonial purposes as the bayonet obstructed the path of the .303 round fired from this rifle.
Dimensions: The blade measures approximately 7-1/4 inch long; overall it measures approximately 11-1/2 inch long.
