Tube, Airway

Intubation is a procedure used when a patient cannot breathe on their own. The doctor inserts a tube down the throat and into the windpipe to make it easier to get air into and out of the lungs. A machine called a ventilator pumps in air with extra oxygen which helps patients breathe out air full of carbon dioxide (CO2). This is called mechanical ventilation. It helps keep oxygen and CO2 at healthy levels.

Tube, Airway - Airway toolHistory: Designed by Arthur Guedel, airways tubes come in a variety of sizes, from infant to adult, and are used commonly in pre-hospital emergency care and for short term airway management post anaesthetic or when manual methods are inadequate to maintain an open airway.

Equipment like this is utilized by certified first responders, emergency medical technicians, paramedics and other health professionals when tracheal intubation is either not available, not advisable, or is of short-term duration.

Airways tubes are used only in unconscious people, because of the likelihood the device would stimulate a gag reflex in conscious or semi-conscious persons. This could result in vomit and lead to an obstructed airway.
