Stretchers

This First World War stretcher measures 93 ½” long x 22” wide. Mostly because of the wooden poles and metal attachments to them, it weighs almost 30 pounds. A stretcher or litter is carried by two or four stretcher (litter) bearers to evacuate the wounded at the first level/echelon of medical evacuation.

Most stretchers are made of brown or green canvas stretched between two wooden or metal poles. Most will have a cross braces built in to the stretcher to help support the weight of the wounded or ill person. This 1WW stretcher has small wheels so it may be rolled, where possible.
