Kitchen, Field

The Napoleonic adage “an army travels on its stomach” is one of the most basic military principles that causes militaries to succeed or fail in battles and wars. The importance of reasonable food and field fresh rations is paramount to successful military operations.

A military “field kitchen” is a kitchen, usually on wheels, used primarily to provide hot food to troops near the front line or in temporary encampments.

The first field kitchens were carried in four-wheeled wagons (such as chuckwagons) by military units on campaigns throughout history used as late as the 19th century. By the 20th century, smaller two-wheeled trailers became common.

The Canadian Army (CA) continues to support the need for fresh cooked meals, whenever possible. The platform that enables fresh ration feeding for the Army is the mobile kitchen trailer (MKT). The MKT has provided the CA’s integral fresh feeding capability since 1984. The MKT is designed to feed groups of up to 150 or more personnel and offers the most flexible capability as it can be positioned, stabilized and sheltered to deploy on almost any ground and during demanding weather conditions.
